Time for chocolate!
May. 8th, 2010 08:54 pmRummage sale is over! My mother is a saint!!!! Not only did she come babysit my kids Friday-Saturday, she took them to the Ark at church and took over for the paid babysitter at 3:30. When the paid sitter was there, there were 4 or fewer kids in the ark, my mom had about 10 because she got the after school shift. Then Saturday morning, she said, "Wake me up when it's about time to go over, I'll help you in the morning until the kids wake up."
She worked incredibly hard and without her it wouldn't have been as successful as it was. I had about 3 people who had signed up for the early shift (6:30am - 9am) not show up, but my mom worked as hard as 3 of them. I had about 8 people signed up and 5 showed plus my mom, so not a disaster, but still I wish they'd all been there.
There were about 30 customers lined up outside the caution tape waiting for us to cut the ribbon at 7am. We cut right at the stoke of 7 (by my watch) and the cashier was ringing up sales nearly continuously from then until half an hour past closing at 1pm. (My cashiers were saints too.)
People are tired but satisfied, and everyone is talking about next year. We made about 20% more money than last year ($6K this year). I was hoping for double, but we had less total rummage this year. We did sell more than 50% of the donated volume, the best sell-through rate we've ever had. And we have good homes for most of the rest, so environmentally it's a success and delayed lots of items ending up in landfills.
I have a few more odds and ends to take care of, like cataloging the amounts of pricing materials we used so we know at what level to stock for next year.
Everyone keeps telling me what an awesome job I've done, and that strokes my ego a little bit, but mostly our church community needed something to be successful right now. It was a great community event and brought together generations of adults in ways few other church events do.
