I've successfully had my mac ssh to my linux box so that I could run programs like Gnucash from the other room while Jon is sleeping. Unfortunately we only have one comfy nurshing glider rocker (and the mac doesn't have enough space in front of it for a big chair anyway) and I now want to be able to run macintosh programs from the console of my linux box.

Does anyone know if it's possible to ssh *to* the mac and then run programs like iPhoto or apeture? I don't want to spend tons of time looking for a solution that doesn't exist. I also want to start culling through the baby pictures and pick some to post.

I do it all the time. :) I think it's basically built in, though if it doesn't work for you, check your network services/firewall settings (in the usual preferences window): I think ssh is there.

Of course, I don't actually run iPhoto that way; I'm logging in and using Unix stuff from the command line. I may have misunderstood your question. :) I've never heard anything about the Mac system being able to serve programs the way that X does, if that's what you're thinking.

Since Mac Apps are not XWindows based, I don't think you can just run them from the linux box. But you can use VNC, run this on your mac:

and any VNC client on your linux box.
