Vegas Wedding
Apr. 2nd, 2007 11:10 pmWe had a great time in Las Vegas last weekend and my water did not break on the way home. Two friends got married. Yes in Las Vegas. Yes on April Fools day. But it suits the two of them very well and I'm really happy that it all came together for them.
On Sunday after the wedding we planned to walk a few blocks on the strip, see if there were any tickets to fun shows at half price for that evening, buy some, and go back to our hotel to take a nap until the show started. It ended up turning into a nearly 4 mile walk punctuated by frequent ice cream and rest room breaks. This was my frist time in Vegas (and is likely to be my only time there) and I got to see the inside of many places on the strip.
They're all so different on the outside, but the casino level looks nearly the same in every one. Many have different flavors to the malls that seem to be inside every one, and the rest rooms are all decorated in ways that match with the casino's general theme.
The walk was long enough that I strongly considered taking a bus back to the hotel where our car was parked, but in the end we walked back. That might have been a bad idea, it's hard to tell. We didn't buy tickets to anything and instead had a nice romantic meal just the two of us back at our hotel before collapsing into bed.
At 3:30 am I woke up feeling very damp in places pregnant women should unless they're already full term. In all of my reading, I hadn't remembered anything about water breaking pre-maturely without labor starting. Peter was already full term when my water broke with him.
I spent from 3:30 am to 4:30 am trying to evaluate the possibilities and what courses of action I could take. I put on underpants so that I could localize amounts and locations of fluid. That didn't help much, as it was just generally slightly damp, nothing as bad as what was already in the bed.
In the end I decided that I probably shouldn't call my doctor at 4:30 am from Las Vegas, and I should probably let Jon sleep until 7:15 when our alarm went off, and I should do the same. With no signs of labor, and a baby still actively kicking without obvious flow of waters and mere "dampness" that could be sweat, I didn't want to end up in a hospital in Las Vegas missing my 10:20 am flight, when I could be home in San Jose in less than 9 hours. We had to leave the hotel by 8 to make the flight in time.
I called my doctor the second our plane landed in San Jose. They were on lunch but paged the nurse who talked to me and recommended I go to the L&D ward as soon as possible to be evaluated. By the time I got there they had changed their minds and would rather see me in the office, so I saw my doctor there at 2pm. Because she had to squeeze me in I had a nice little spot of dampness on the doctor's office white paper sheet covering to show her by the time she came in. She did 3 different tests and saw nothing of concern. Whew! One of the tests will have the lab results back tomorrow. That's the one that is predictive of going into labor in the next 3 weeks.
Now it's almost midnight. Baby is clearly alive and actively kicking. My underwear have been dry since about 4pm. I'm drinking lots of fluids to make sure I'm well hydrated (thanks Jon for bringing me more milk at my every beck and call!) I now have access to my What to Expect guide and looked up pre-term pre-mature repture of membranes and noted that even if the tests showed false negatives, as long as there is no labor and no infection things are still good for the baby. There's also even a chance that the amnionic sac will heal on it's own.
I'm now a little shy of doing more 5 hour walks and I think I'll avoid lifting Peter tomorrow if possible and showering tonight so as not to obscure any additional wettness signs, but it looks like everybody is healthy despite the scare.
We picked up Peter at my parents' house at around 3:30. He was happy to see us but he had a good time at Grandma Coleman's house. We'll have to do it again some time. Like when the baby comes for real. :-)

Date: 2007-04-03 03:13 pm (UTC)Look into big doses (~1-2 g, I think) of vitamin C. It can help seal any ruptured membranes and prevent premature rupture.
Karen was born a week after my water broke (broke 37w3 d, b 38w 5d). I didn't want that to happen again, so my midwives recommended vit C with flavinoids (? =eat the white parts of the orange...). My water broke at 1:27 pm on 11/21, Elliot was born at 1:29 pm on 11/21. Yeah, it's one data point, but there you go.

Date: 2007-04-04 01:29 am (UTC)They also had me take 1:1 Mg:Ca to reduce contractions (unproductive) that drove me nuts starting at 25 weeks or so. It worked very well for me. If I missed (or upchucked) a dose, the ctx would be much worse the next day. These ctx were only uncomforable, not otherwise worrisome. I ran regularly through 33 weeks.
I've seen since then that the primary effect of the Mg and Ca is to reduce blood pressure, though.

Date: 2007-04-04 05:34 am (UTC)I thought they had vitamin C in them, but now that I look, it appears they only have 2% RDA of vitamin C so I should make sure to get other sources as well. My prunes are iron fortified, which makes them an especially good snack. Their only downside is that they're a little bit to sticky to eat while working on the computer.
Baby is kicking now (10pm Tuesday) so all still appears well.

Date: 2007-04-03 09:31 pm (UTC)If it is positive and you want to take action to reduce the chance of going into preterm labor, I can give you the short list of things to do which have evidence of efficacy. (For obvious reasons, I have done a fair amount of research on this subject!)
