This must be an April Fools joke... but that doesn't start for another few hours I thought? Google now has an 8-bit graphics mode in Google maps. Accessed through pressing either the button next to Earth/Satellite/Map buttons, or clicking on a "Start your Quest" floating button hovering over the driving directions.

Wow. My house in 8-bit color. I know from some experiments I did with a similar image when I was working on printing at HP that it's possible to do much, much better, but still, this is weird so I thought I'd share.

It's pretty cute, though wow, an eye searing green for the map on my mac.

Almost all of the map graphics (excluding certain landmarks, but including the street view person icon and random monsters) are taken directly from the original 1986 Dragon Quest. So, your eyes are sacrificed for the sake of the reference, I'm afraid. Personally I'm totally in love with it.
