The coverage has made a big deal of how Canada failed to get a single Gold medal each of the last two times they've hosted the Olympics, but that this time they have high hopes for a much better performance. I wonder if Canada's Long Term Athlete Development Program will start to show results in this Olympics.

I first heard about it from a Canadian involved in my sport (vaulting). My impression was that Canada commissioned a study to figure out what produces the best top-level athletes. The study produced the recommendations on that website (Active start, fundamentals, learn to train, train to train, train to compete, train to win, and active for life) but Canada didn't do anything to implement them at first -- at first they sold the results of the study to numerous small countries, then they were shocked as those countries started turning out Olympic level athletes.

At that point they started implementing it in full, and I wonder how many years it will take to start seeing Canada at the top of the medal count in the summer and winter Olympics.

PS. My favorite part is in the active start stage, ages 0-6, "Not sedentary for more than 60 minutes except when sleeping."
