Grumble. Macintosh disk troubles
Jan. 16th, 2008 11:02 pmMy G5 has decided to have disk troubles. I'm suspecting software curruption because it's not acting like a hardware problem, and the disk SMART status is Verified. I had files disappear off of two spindles at once. Hard Drive B was at first completely unreachable, and unmountable, and Disk Utility couldn't touch it (complained of bad B nodes.)
Following a cold boot a day later, Disk Utility could start the repair process, but still failed the first 4 times it tried. Eventually the mac decided that it had "reapaired" the disk. Many files are back, but not all of them. Drive B holds all of the large data files for my video business and the current working mater control file for Final Cut Pro. The "auto save vault" for FCP is on Drive A.
My "auto save vault" was completely empty! My backup strategy is supposed to make sure that if one spindle fails, the other one holds a copy of the data no more than half an hour older. When I finish a project, I also archive a copy of the master control file onto our server, which Jon backs up weekly. The video files themselves are too large to back up, and I rely on the fact that I can always get the original data off of the original tape if necessary.
Grumble, grumble. My Girl Scout project of us swinging on the flying trapeze from last winter is completely missing. That project was never really finished, so I never backed it up elsewhere, and now it's just up and vanished from both the vault and the disk it was stored on. I still have the original media, but this is annoying. If I can't find a data recovery solution, I'll probably just give up on that project. It was fun, but not worth doing twice.
I've searched the net and I plan to download and try out Data Rescue II for the mac. Any comments?

[PS. OBeth, the master files for your projects are all safe and sound, as is a copy of the finished disk.]
