That time of year for ants

zathrus's post reminded me that a few weeks ago we had ants again. I didn't post at the time because it was such a mild case of them compared to last year. We cleaned the counters and I sprayed some raid on the window sill near the kitchen sink and they haven't come back yet, so I'm hoping they won't.

This happened right after the painter pressure-washed the house and it may or may not be related. Looking back at my tags, it happened at the end of July and in September last year as well.

We have some odd ants at the moment. Earlier this year, we got a standard line of ants coming in through an AC vent near the front door and heading for whatever they could find in the kitchen. After several rounds of spraying various pet-safe things on their point of entry, they eventually stopped coming in there.

But now we have random ants. I see them in the kitchen fairly often, but only one or two at a time. Without a line to follow, I'm not really sure where they're coming from or going to, which makes it harder to figure out what to spray. I put out a couple ant bait things which I've seen a few ants going into, but it hasn't stopped them. The baits are probably several years old; I'm wondering if they lose effectiveness.
